Eagle Pass Seeking Legislative Action

(Press Release) The City of Eagle Pass has been aggressively seeking legislative action and working with our state legislative delegation since January.
In April, Mayor Ramsey English-Cantu testified before the House County Affairs Committee in support of HB 3759. This bill would amend the Texas Government Code on legal notices and potentially save the city 60-70 thousand dollars a year. Current law requires that the city post legal notices on newspapers that have a second-class postal matter. The city has been forced to advertise in the San Antonio Express for years in order to be in compliance with current code. The bill would amend the Texas Government Code and allow the city to advertise on locally owned newspapers.
The city has also been aggressively seeking legislative action in support of expanded transportation and infrastructure projects. Mayor English-Cantu and the city’s lobbyist Ernie Gonzalez have testified before the House Transportation Committee in support of HB 3767 and HB 4306. Both bills would support homeland security, economic development, and transportation needs between Eagle Pass and Laredo by potentially providing up to 170 million in State funds to support infrastructure.
HB 2419 is another bill filed by State Representative Poncho Nevarez that would direct TXDOT to conduct a Regional Transportation Corridor Study throughout the territory served by the Middle Rio Grande Development Council. The city’s lobbyist testified before the House Transportation Committee in March and secured 15 resolutions from cities, counties, and school districts within the region in support of this legislative action.
“I am pleased that the city is taking a very active participation this legislative session and we look forward to working with Representative Poncho Nevarez and Senator Peter Flores on netting legislative results for our constituents,” said Mayor Ramsey English-Cantu.
