Ledezma Earns Avalos Scholarship

Jessika Ledezma recently traveled to Uvalde from Eagle Pass to personally thank Enrique Avalos for funding the Esmeralda Rosalia Avalos Education scholarship that will allow her to take summer classes.
Ms. Ledezma, originally from Piedras Negras, moved to the United States when she was 13 and graduated from Eagle Pass High School. She plans to complete her student teaching in fall of 2020 and become certified to teach Early Childhood-6th Grade. The committed scholar also intends to challenge the bilingual and math tests in order to add those skills to her resume.
The eldest of four sisters, Ledezma said she has always aspired to make teaching her career and hopes to motivate children to go to school. She also wishes to set an example for her sisters and show them the same support she has received from all of her family, which includes the employees of the Sul Ross Small Business Development Center where she works part-time.
SBDC Executive Director Elizabeth Peña said, “I am so happy Jessika received the Avalos Teaching scholarship as she is a deserving candidate who is passionate about teaching. Jessika is smart, caring and a joy to work with. She is a great support system at the SBDC where she is constantly learning and applying what she has learned to make the everyday operations seem seamless. Jessika is always willing to help no matter how big or small the task is. We are truly fortunate to have Jessika be a part of our SBDC team and we know that Jessika will be a great success in whatever she decides to undertake in her future employment opportunities.”
