City of Eagle Pass City Council Adopts Balanced Budget for FY 2020-21

(Press Release) Eagle Pass, TX – The City Council for the City of Eagle Pass is proud to announce that they have approved a balanced budget for FY 2020-21 on September 15, 2020. The City of Eagle Pass Annual Operating Budget for the period of October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021 faced many challenges due to the ripple effect caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic. One of the challenges was the shortfall of revenues generated by the two City-owned International Bridges due to the implementation by the federal government to close the southern border and only allow essential travel. Despite these challenges, the City’s Administration Team worked diligently with all Departments to ensure the preparation of a balanced budget that would be presented and approved by the City Council.
The City of Eagle Pass budget of approximately $55 million reflects the City’s commitment to continue to provide high quality services to the citizens of Eagle Pass. This accomplishment was done without increasing the City’s property tax rate. The adopted budget will allow for the City’s Departments to continue working toward accomplishing the goals established by the Mayor and City Council.
“This Pandemic has caused a financial strain on many local governments and a higher demand for our services,” said George Antuna, City Manager. “I would like to thank City Council and all of our Staff for working together to create innovative ways of maximizing our reduced revenues and at the same time to continue to provide services to our citizens without interruption.” Antuna further stated, “The budget prepared and presented to the City Council is a symbol of Staff and their dedication and hard work in helping bring forth a comprehensive and balanced budget with less revenue.”
“As Mayor of this great city, I would like to thank our City Council for their courage and discipline as this budget cycle was one of the hardest, we have faced. Plus, thanks to our Administration Team and Department Heads for working diligently as one cohesive team in their efforts to prepare a balance budget despite the revenue shortfalls that the City has encountered as a result of the current pandemic,” said Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes. “Our citizens should rest assured that our commitment is to continue to provide high, exemplary services in our City.”
