Eagle Pass Man Shot and Killed, One Individual Arrested

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber announced that one Eagle Pass male individual was shot and killed on Friday, September 3, 2021 by another male individual at Calle Progreso in Loma Bonita Subdivision in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Sheriff Schmerber reported that one male individual was arrested as a result of the shooting and the case is under investigation by the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department Detective Division and the Texas Rangers.
The gunshot victim was transported to Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center in Eagle Pass, where he was pronounced deceased.
On September 1, 2021, Texas’ new law allowing the open carry of firearms went into effect. The fatality resulting from a gunshot wound on September 3, 2021 at Calle Progreso in Loma Bonita Subdivision is Eagle Pass and Maverick County’s first fatality after the new Texas open carry law went into effect.
Texas law enforcement agencies vehemently opposed the passing of the Open Carry Firearm Law, but the Republican Party majority Texas Legislature led by Governor Gregg Abbott approved the controversial law despite pleas from law enforcement agencies against it.
