Maverick County Commissioners Court unanimously approved to lease 40 acres to U.S. Customs and Border Protection for the development and construction of a second Soft-sided Migrant Processing Center in Maverick County at their special meeting held on Tuesday, December 7, 2021.
CBP representatives advised Commissioners Court that they need 40 acres to construct a second Soft-sided Migrant Processing Center in Maverick County due to the large volume of undocumented migrants entering the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum or employment.
CBP already constructed a similar facility at the Eagle Pass U.S. Border Patrol Southside Station on El Indio Highway (FM 1021).
A second facility is needed to handle migrants entering through northern Maverick County such as in Normandy and Quemado.
The new facility will have a capacity to house and process up to 500 migrants, including families.
The new facility will be located on FM 131 near the Radar Base between the Maverick County Emergency Operations Center and the Eagle Pass GEO Detention Center.
Commissioner Olga Ramos placed the item on the agenda after having meetings with CBP and U.S. Border Patrol representatives.
