Maverick County Tom Bowles Detention Center Warden Roberto Parra announced on Thursday, January 20, 2022, that there are 34 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases among inmates in the county detention center in Eagle Pass, Texas.
According to previous published reports, the Maverick County Tom Bowles Detention Center houses up to 250 inmates from Maverick County, Hays County, Webb County, Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas, and U. S. Marshal’s federal pre-trial detainees.
Approximately 13.6 percent of the Tom Bowles Detention Center’s inmates are currently infected with COVID-19 pursuant to Warden Parra’s announcement.
Warden Parra added that all confirmed positive COVID-19 inmates are under isolation from general population and receiving medical treatment to avoid a spread of the coronavirus among the 250 total inmate population.
Parra noted that a majority of the infected inmates are showing mild COVID-19 symptoms and none are seriously ill requiring hospitalization at the moment.
Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber announced on January 11, 2022 that all inmate visitations at the Tom Bowles Detention Center were temporarily suspended due to a rise of COVID-19 cases among inmates.
Sheriff Schmerber added that the temporary suspension of inmate visitation focuses on preventing the transmissibility of COVID-19 cases among inmates, visitors, and personnel of the Tom Bowles Detention Center and the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department.
On January 3, 2022, Sheriff Schmerber announced that the County of Maverick had registered a total of $2,312,242 in total revenues during 2021 from several governmental entities for housing their inmates at the Tom Bowles Detention Center. Schmerber added that these revenues went to Maverick County general fund for use by all county departments, including the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department and Tom Bowles Detention Center.
