The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention implemented a new Community Level COVID-19 guidance classification system of all counties in the U. S. effective March 1, 2022.
The new COVID-19 Community Levels is a new tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at the hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area.
The CDC recommends that people take precautions to protect oneself and others from COVID-19 based on the COVID-19 Community Level in one’s community (county).
According to the first Community Level classification released by CDC, Maverick County is classified as a High Level COVID-19 Community. Consequently, Maverick County residents are recommended to wear a mask indoors in public, stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines, get tested if one has symptoms, and additional precautions may be needed for people with at high risk for severe illness.
CDC also recommends that people in High Level COVID-19 communities may choose to mask at any time. People with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask.
People who immunocompromised or high risk for severe disease should take measures to protect themselves.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, Maverick County reported two new deaths from COVID-19 and six new confirmed positive cases on Thursday, March 3, 2022, bringing the cumulative total to 454 deaths and 20,648 confirmed positive cases.
CDC recommends Maverick County residents follow guidelines appropriate for High Level Communities discussed above.
COVID-19 remains active and transmissible within Maverick County at a high level. Only 10 percent of counties in the U.S. are currently classified as High Level Communities, while 90 percent are either classified as Low or Medium Level Communities.
