Maverick County Hospital District Celebrated World Health Day on April 7th

The Maverick County Hospital District (MCHD) celebrated World Health Day on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at an outdoor ceremony to raise awareness concerning the importance of world health and wellness within all communities, including Maverick County.
MCHD Chief Executive Officer Alma Martinez welcomed all attendees to the ceremony and introduced MCHD Board of Directors Chairman Aaron Valdez to address the audience.
Valdez stated it was his “pleasure to recognize all aspects of health and wellness and re-solidify the District’s partnership with the City of Eagle Pass, Eagle Pass Independent School District, and Maverick County.” He added that “it is my mission to create awareness of health and wellness in our community.”
Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas, Jr. presented and read a proclamation issued by the Eagle Pass City Council in honor of World Health Day 2022 and healthcare workers who have worked diligently and courageously against the COVID-19 pandemic to minimize its impact on our community as well as all other diseases, viruses, and illnesses.
Eagle Pass City Councilman Elias Diaz, a mental health counselor employed with MCHD, stated the goal of the MCHD is to provide the highest level of healthcare to the community. Diaz noted the MCHD has “an amazing team” of healthcare providers, staff, administration, and Board of Directors dedicated to delivering the finest healthcare services.
World Health Day is celebrated annually on every April 7th to draw attention to and raise awareness about international public health issues. World Health Day was established by the World Health Organization since 1948.
The theme of World Health Day 2022 is “Our Planet, Our Health” to highlight the interdependence between our planet and the health of its citizens.
Attending the MCHD World Health Day 2022 ceremony included MCHD Board of Directors Rebecca Robinson, Vice-President, and Humberto Duran, Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas, Jr., Mayor Pro-Tem Yolanda P. Ramon, Councilman Elias Diaz, and Councilwoman Monica J. Cruz, Eagle Pass City Manager George Antuna, Eagle Pass Independent School District Board of Trustees Jorge Barrera, President, and Hilda P. Martinez, Vice-President, Maverick County Commissioners Olga M Ramos of Precinct 3 and Roberto Ruiz of Precinct 4, former Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu, and MCHD healthcare providers, staff, and local citizens.
Mayor Salinas noted the importance of a healthy planet as evidenced by the COVID-19 pandemic that has afflicted all countries and their people.
According to the World Health Organization, as of April 7, 2022 there have been 493,392,853 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 reported worldwide, including 6,165,833 deaths. A total of 11,250,782,214 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered worldwide as of April 5, 2022.
In the United States, there are 80,289,264 confirmed COVID-19 cases reported as of April 8, 2022, including 984,571 deaths.
Texas has reported 6,745,219 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 87,594 deaths, as of April 7, 2022.
Maverick County has had 20,802 COVID-19 confirmed cases reported, including 463 deaths, as of April 7, 2022.
A healthy planet means a healthy citizenry. World Health Day 2022 theme of “Our Planet, Our Health” reminds us of the importance of sustaining a healthy planet and a healthy citizenry.
