Eagle Pass-Maverick County Little League Softball Juniors All-Stars Blank Mineral Wells 15-0 at West Texas State Tournament

Fresh from their West Texas Section 3 Sectional Championship last week, the mighty Eagle Pass-Maverick County Little League Softball Juniors (14 Under) All-Stars blanked the Mineral Wells, Texas All-Stars 15-0 via the ten run rule after four innings in game one of the West Texas State Championship on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, in Abilene, Texas, advancing to the winner’s bracket to meet the Pecos, Texas All-Stars on Thursday, July 14, 2022 with the winner qualifying for the West Texas Championship in the double elimination tournament.
Eagle Pass-Maverick County All-Stars jumped to a strong 11-0 lead in the first inning behind clutch hits by Claritza Leija, Karina Gomez, Elisa Gomez, Emily Valdez, Itzel Luna, and Sofia Gomez, taking control of the tournament game.
Eagle Pass-Maverick County All-Stars hurler Mayte Figueroa earned the win with two solid innings, allowing no hits, six strike outs, and only walked one batter.
Eagle Pass-Maverick County’s pitching depth showed as Sofia Gomez came in relief with the game well in hand to toss the final two innings out of the bullpen.
Sofia Gomez led the Eagle Pass-Maverick County All-Stars offensive battery with a two out of three performance at the plate, teammate Claritza Leija slammed a home run in the second inning, and several players had at least one hit each.
The Eagle Pass-Maverick County All-Stars advanced to the key winners bracket in the double elimination tournament, earning the right to battle the Pecos, Texas All-Stars on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 8 p.m. with the winner advancing to the West Texas State Championship game. The loser of the July 14 game will have to play the winner of the Mineral Wells versus Oil Belt All-Stars in the elimination bracket to climb back to the championship game.
The winner of the West Texas State Championship advances to the Little League Softball Juniors Southwest Championship next week.
The Eagle Pass-Maverick County All-Stars are undefeated in Little League tournament play, improving their overall record to 6-0.
