A young male gunman with long black hair and of small build believed to be between 18-20 years old opened gunfire atop a rooftop with a high-powered rifle on innocent children, men and women marching in and/or watching a traditional 4th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, a suburb north of Chicago, at approximately 10:14 a.m. on July 4, 2022, killing at least six people and wounding over two dozen other individuals rushed to area hospitals, including some in critical condition.
The suspect remains loose and a massive manhunt for the gunman is underway while citizens are asked to shelter in place in the ongoing investigation.
The “horrific, senseless act of violence” shocked the peaceful and patriotic gathering of people watching the parade and those who were marching in it, causing chaos and fear among people fleeing and seeking shelter from the rapid gunfire from the gunman atop a rooftop.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are involved in the investigation and manhunt for the suspect, including the Highland Park Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Lake County Major Crime Task Force, and all available municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies.
A high-powered rifle has been recovered, but the gunman slipped discretely from the rooftop into an unknown area and is believed to be armed and dangerous. Eyewitnesses described the gunman was wearing either a white or blue shirt and was a young white male with long black hair, and of small build.
The case remains under investigation as of press time.
