Eagle Pass Eagles and Winn Mavericks Open 2022 Football Season with 16th Rivalry Meeting

The 2022 Texas high school football season opens with the 16th Rivalry meeting between the Eagle Pass High School Eagles and the C. C. Winn High School Mavericks on Friday, August 26, 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass, Texas.
The Eagles will host the Mavericks in the 16th meeting between the two Eagle Pass teams in what promises to be another exciting game in the storied rivalry series. The Mavericks will seek their first victory over the Eagles in the Rivalry series while the Eagles will seek to remain perfect against the Mavericks in the series.
The Eagles versus Mavericks football game is the most anticipated and highest attendance game of the season among Eagle Pass and Maverick County football fans with an estimated 8,500 fans expected to attend. This the first year the rivalry game is being played at the start of the regular season due to scheduling issues with the teams district schedules. Buckle up, this game will be a rock’em, sock’em game for the bragging rights of the mythical City Championship as well as the fictional Menudo Bowl Championship. You gotta be there to experience it. Both teams will give their best efforts to prevail in this rivalry series.
Last year, the Eagles defeated the Mavericks 28-3 to earn their 15th consecutive win of the rivalry series. But in football, you never can tell as the ball bounces and twists in all directions changing momentum in a game.
The Eagles will feature a strong team with 37 returning letterman, including nine starters on offense led by 2021 District 30-6A Offensive MVP Quarterback Isaac Stanwick, standout running back Thomas J. Mares, wide receivers Kyle Gloria and Chris Frausto while six defensive starters return such as linebacker Jesse James Martinez and defensive back Robert De La Garza.
The Mavericks also return a strong team with 28 returning letterman, including five on offense with 2021 District 13-5A, Division I All-District running back Jeremiah Robinson and senior quarterback Abdiel Cardona and six on defense with All-District linebacker Jaime Barrientos, defensive tackles Angel Cavazos, Emmanuel Reyes, defensive ends Michael Hernandez and Moises Toscano, and defensive backs Armando Lechler, Jonathan Salayandia, and Andres Rodriguez.
Eagles Head Coach Tom Gonzalez stated his team will be ready for the classic kickoff rivalry game against the Mavericks with two scrimmages under their belt.
Mavericks Head Coach Eric Villasenor noted the Spring season practices and scrimmage game has prepared the Mavericks for the storied rivalry game against the Eagles.
