The mighty Eagle Pass High School Eagles trounced the Corpus Christi Moody High School Trojans 58-0 in a non-district football game on Friday, September 9, 2022, at the Jourdanton Independent School District Football Stadium in Jourdanton, Texas, improving to 3-0 overall in the season while the Trojans dropped to 0-3.
The Moody Trojans won the pre-game coin toss and chose to defer possession of the football to the second half, thus kicking off to the Eagles to open the game.
The Eagles received the football on their first possession at the Moody 47 yard line and immediately went to the airwaves as quarterback Isaac Stanwick tossed a 42 yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Jose Hernandez on the third play of the drive and place kicker Oliver Velez added the point after attempt with 11:30 minutes remaining in the first quarter, stunning the Trojans fans.
The Eagles self-proclaimed “Land Shark Defense” dominated the front line of the Trojans on their first possession, as well as entire game, forcing them to go three plays and punt.
On their second possession, the Eagles continued to exploit the Trojans defensive secondary as quarterback Isaac Stanwick hit a perfect aerial bomb to wide receiver Jose Hernandez for what appeared to have been an 84 yard touchdown, but the touchdown was nullified due to an Eagles penalty for ineligible man downfield. After a combined air and ground attack, the Eagles struck paydirt on the fifth play of the drive as Stanwick tossed a 48 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Sebastian Diaz and place kicker Oliver Velez extra point sailed through the uprights, extending the Eagles lead 14-0 with 7:31 minutes remaining in the game
The stout Eagles defense once again held the Trojans on their second possession, forcing a punt.
Late in the first quarter, the Eagles engineered an 76 yard touchdown drive culminating on a sensational 47 yard run by running back Thomas J. Mares into the Trojans end zone and the point after attempt by place kicker Oliver Velez was perfect, extending the Eagles lead 21-0 with 3:50 minutes remaining in the first quarter.
On the Trojans next possession, Eagle defensive back Jake Zapata stepped in front of a Trojan wide receiver to swipe the intended pass for an interception and returned the ball to the Trojans 13 yard line. After two Eagle penalties, quarterback Isaac Stanwick connected with wide receiver Wilfredo Frausto for a 17 yard touchdown pass and Velez’s point after attempt was good, increasing the Eagles lead 28-0 with 11:51 minutes remaining in the second quarter.
On the Trojans ensuing possession, the stingy Eagle “Land Shark Defense” sacked Trojan quarterback John Ortega for a loss on a third down and eight yards to go play, forcing another punt.
The Eagles utilized a combination of runs by Thomas J. Mares and the passing of Isaac Stanwick on their next possession, culminating on a 61 touchdown drive as Stanwick hit wide receiver Wilfredo Frausto streaking down the middle for a 23 yard touchdown pass reception and Velez extra point was good, enlarging the Eagles lead to 35-0 with 7:43 minutes remaining in the second quarter.
After another fine defensive stop by the Eagle “Land Shark Defense,” the Eagles quickly lit up the scoreboard with a dazzling 68 yard touchdown run by Thomas J. Mares and Velez extra point failed due to a bad snap from the center, upping the Eagles lead 41-0 with 5:41 minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Later in the second quarter, Eagle place kicker Oliver Velez hit a 25 yard field goal attempt to increase the lead to 44-0 with 19 seconds remaining before halftime.
The Eagles added two scores in the second half including a three yard touchdown dive by Thomas J. Mares in the third quarter and a magical 44 yard touchdown run by reserve quarterback Andres Garcia Villarreal in the fourth quarter and both point after attempts were good to end the game with a final score of 58-0 with the talented Eagle “Land Shark Defense” shutting out the potent Trojans rushing and passing game.
