Eagle Pass Police Department Police Chief Federico Garza announced at a press conference held on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at the Eagle Pass Public Safety Headquarters that an Eagle Pass man, Jesus Esteban Vasquez, age 34, had been arrested for the homicide of his fellow co-worker, Evelyn Guardado, age 24, who was missing since January 31, in Medina County, Texas on IH-35 near San Antonio as he traveled out of town with family members.
Garza stated Vasquez had been previously charged with the felony of unauthorized of a motor vehicle after he had used the decedent’s automobile and had moved it from his home to the Latigo Apartments in Eagle Pass and the keys to the vehicle were found on him. Vasquez was given a $35,000 Bond for this charge, which he promptly paid a bail bond company to post said bond.
Garza noted that local law enforcement agencies located the deceased body of Evelyn Guardado on Tuesday, February 7, at about 9:36 a.m. at a farm near Quemado in northern Maverick County, and requested a warrant of arrest for homicide (murder) against Vasquez.
Investigators kept a strict surveillance of Vasquez during the investigation and after posting bond on the earlier charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
A family member of Guardado also witnessed Vasquez at a local gas station filling up a vehicle with family members and followed him out of town past the U. S. Border Patrol Checkpoint on U. S. Highway 57 and towards IH-35 and alerted law enforcement authorities as to his location.
Medina County Sheriff Department Deputies and Texas DPS Officers stopped the vehicle in which Vasquez was traveling and arrested him for homicide as a result of the Maverick County warrant of arrest issued on him. Vasquez was extradited from Medina County to Maverick County Tom Bowles Detention Center to face charges for the homicide of Evelyn Guardado.
Garza noted that multiple law enforcement authorities assisted with the investigation and continue investigating the criminal case against Vasquez as well as against any other persons who may be found to have assisted or conspired with Vasquez.
Garza thanked the Eagle Pass Police Department, Maverick County Sheriff’s Department, Texas Rangers, U. S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), U. S. Border Patrol, FBI, U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Eagle Pass Independent School District Police Department, Mexican law enforcement authorities, and others for collaborating in this investigation.
The case remains under investigation. Garza stated that if anyone has any information regarding the homicide of Evelyn Guardado, to please contact the Eagle Pass Police Department at (830) 773-9044.
