Former Eagle Pass Mayor Pro-Tem Ricardo S. Rivera Passes Away at Age 84
Eagle Passans mourned the passing away of longtime community public servant and former Eagle Pass Mayor Pro-Tem, Ricardo S. Rivera, age 84, on Friday, February 3, 2023.
Rivera was born on February 4, 1938 in Eagle Pass, Maverick County, Texas to Secundino and Julia Rivera. He graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1957.
Rivera is best remembered as having a loving heart and being the kindest person in Eagle Pass, dedicating his life to serving the youth and citizens of the community as an unselfish public servant and community leader.
Rivera was elected and re-elected to multiple terms as an Eagle Pass City Council Member, rising to Mayor Pro-Tem of his native hometown. He was an ardent volunteer of the Eagle Pass Lions Club doing community service projects, including coaching and sponsoring Little League Baseball youth teams and managing the local Little League Baseball organization.
Rivera also was a proud volunteer with the Eagle Pass Firefighters Association for over 17 years, often rushing from work or a City Council meeting to put out a fire blaze or provide assistance at a traffic accident in the community.
Eagle Passans dearly remember Rivera as their favorite snack foods vendor delivery man for over 50 years, including stints with Nabisco, Frito Lay, Wise Potato Chips, Eagle Snacks, Mercado Latino, and Williamson-Dickies. Every child in the community would anxiously anticipate Rivera and his food snack delivery truck at local convenience stores, often paying out of his own pocket for products to give to children whose parents could not afford to purchase the food snacks at the stores.
Rivera is survived by his daughter, Melissa Garza, two sons, Ronnie Rivera and Ricky Rivera, step-daughter, Ruth Calderon, sister, Irma Rodriguez, brother, Roberto Rivera, and 11 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
