According to the voter turnout results during the Early Voting Period of the City of Eagle Pass City Council and City Charter Amendment Election of May 6, 2023 released by Ronnie Rivera, City of Eagle Pass Public Relations Director, on Tuesday, May 2, reflects an extremely low voter turnout in the critical election of two City Council positions, Place 1 and 3, demonstrating voter apathy at the City polls.
Only 978 citizens of Eagle Pass cast a ballot during the Early Voting Period of April 24 through May 2, 2023 of more than 18,000 registered voters-a slim margin of .054 % (five percent) voter participation.
The breakdown of the 976 ballots cast is as follows:
Monday, April 24: 84 votes;
Tuesday, April 25: 163 votes;
Wednesday, April 26: 80 votes;
Thursday, April 27: 85 votes;
Friday, April 28: 115 votes;
Saturday, April 29: 84 votes;
Monday, May 1: 158 votes; and
Tuesday, May 2: 209 votes.
With the City of Eagle Pass experiencing an economic development boom and growth, voters appear to have other issues on their minds other than deciding who should lead the future of the City-leaving that decision to only five percent of registered voters, according to the Early Voting Period results. Yes, only 978 people out of over 18,000 registered voters have cast their ballots.
Now that Early Voting is over with, Eagle Pass registered voters have one final day to come out to vote in the City Election on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Center, 480 S. Adams Street, Eagle Pass, Texas.
Eagle Passans still have an opportunity to have their voices heard on Saturday, May 6, during the Regular Election Day.
Who will be elected to the two City Council positions on the ballot, Place 1 and 3? Who will guide the future of Eagle Pass by their City Council votes or decisions? Will the City Charter Amendment clarifying term limits of City Council and Mayor be approved or voted down?
Today is Wednesday, May 3, 2023, and the Maverick County Appraisal District has yet to release and mail out the proposed 2023 Ad Valorem Tax Property Appraisals in Maverick County, which should have been out since April 15. Will the Ad Valorem Property Appraisals for 2023 be exceedingly high like the past few years? Will your Ad Valorem Property Taxes be increased in 2023 by the City and other local entities? How many Eagle Passans, particularly senior and disabled citizens, will not be able to afford their ad valorem taxes and lose their homes to foreclosure for non-payment of taxes?
These and many other issues depend on the election results of the May 6, 2023 City Council and City Charter Amendment Election.
A total of seven candidates are vying for the two City Council positions on the ballot.
Vying for City Council Place 1 are incumbent City Councilman William “Billy” Davis, Mariano Flores, and Sandra Sassano.
Competing for City Council Place 3 are Mario E. Garcia, Ricardo Lopez, Ana Laura Herrera, and Ruben Camarillo.
All registered Eagle Pass voters are encouraged to come out to vote on Saturday, May 6, at the Multi-Purpose Center from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The City of Eagle Pass future and your taxes rides on the results of this election. Your vote is your voice, Yes, you have a choice. Don’t let a few (five percent) decide for you. Go Vote!
