Eagle Pass Independent School District Hosts Convocation for New School Year

The Eagle Pass Independent School District hosted its new 2025-2026 school year Convocation on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at the Raul A. Gonzalez Fine Arts Center in the Student Activity Center in Eagle Pass, Texas, welcoming over 810 teachers and 1,800 staff personnel for the new academic year, announced Samuel Mijares, Superintendent.
Superintendent Samuel Mijares welcomed all the teachers and personnel and wished them a successful school year. He thanked them for their service to the school district children, parents, and community.
The 2024-2025 Teachers of the Year for the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, Elementary School, and Middle and High School categories were announced at the convocation.
Named as the Teacher of the Year for the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten category was Marisa Lopez of Kennedy Hall, receiving a plaque of recognition and a check for $2,500, from the Eagle Pass Independent School District.
Honored as the Teacher of the Year for the Elementary School category was Javier Flores, Jr. of Liberty Elementary, receiving a plaque of recognition and a $2,500 check from the school district.
Named as the Teacher of the Year for the Middle School and High School category was Sergeant Timothy Leath of C. C. Winn High School, receiving a plaque of recognition and a $2,500 check from the school district.
Attending the Convocation were the Eagle Pass Independent School District Board of Trustees, including President Jorge Barrera, Vice-President Dr. Hilda P. Martinez, Secretary-Treasurer , and Board members Jaime Barrera, Christopher Hiller, Victor E. Perry, and Tom Gonzalez.
Maverick County Judge Ramsey English Cantu and Eagle Pass Mayor Aaron Valdez also attended the Convocation.
A motivation keynote speaker was featured to inspire the local teachers and staff for the new 2025-2026 school year.
Students from both Eagle Pass High School and C. C. Winn High School participated in the Convocation providing entertainment, music, dance, and service above self.
Eagle Pass Independent School District teachers have been participating in a week long in-service program during August 4-8, 2025.
The first official school day for students is on Monday, August 11, 2025 with over 13,300 students expected to be enrolled in 24 campuses throughout the school district.
Parents and community members are reminded that the Texas Tax Free School Holiday starts on Friday, August 8th and runs through Sunday, August 10th, with no sales taxes charged on all school related items.
The Convocation was deemed a great success and highly inspirational by all who attended it, kicking off the new 2025-2026 school year.
