On Monday, August 18, 2025, Eagle Pass Independent School District (EPISD) Superintendent Samuel Mijares held a press conference at the Eagle Pass District Service Center to announce the district’s improved Texas Education Agency (TEA) Accountability rating.
With over 13,300 students enrolled, Eagle Pass ISD is one of the largest districts in the Middle Rio Grande Region. Receiving a B rating with a score of 81 places the district among the highest-rated in the region. Maverick County belongs to Education Service Center Region 20, which also serves Bexar, Dimmit, Zavala, and Uvalde counties.

“I’m very proud to announce our district earned aB rating for the 2024–2025 school year,” Superintendent Mijares stated. “I want to recognize the hard work of our students, the parents for their support, and the dedication of our teachers, administrators, and staff who made this happen.”
The TEA Accountability rating system evaluates Texas school districts on student achievement, school progress, and efforts to close learning gaps among different student groups. Ratings range from A to F, with B representing strong academicperformancewhile still identifying areas for improvement.
This recognition not only reflects the academic progress made by Eagle Pass ISD but also signals a commitment to building a culture of excellence. Superintendent Mijares emphasized that while a B rating is an achievement worth celebrating, the district is determined to push forward.
The improved rating comes at a time when districts across Texas are facing challenges such as teacher shortages, increased academic expectations, and the need for expanded mental health and social support services. For Eagle Pass ISD, the recognition underscores the resilience of the community and the value of collective effort.
Looking ahead, the district plans to expand access to advanced placement courses, dual credit opportunities, and career and technical education programs to ensure students are prepared for both higher education and the workforce.
For families in Eagle Pass and Maverick County, the improved accountability rating serves as a reminder that the district is moving in the right direction to provide every student with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed.
