On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Maverick County Judge Ramsey English Cantu participated in the annual board meeting of the Middle Rio Grande Development Council (MRGDC), where two Eagle Pass based organizations, the Jorge Maldonado Foundation and the Support Hub, were recognized for their outstanding contributions and dedication to the community.
The MRGDC, which represents an eight-county region that includes Maverick, Zavala, Dimmit, Uvalde, Kinney, Val Verde, Edwards, and La Salle counties, brings together county judges, mayors, and local officials to address shared regional challenges. As a regional planningorganization, its purpose is to promote collaboration, coordinate services, and ensure rural communities have a strong voice in securing state and federal resources. For counties like Maverick, participation in the council is especially critical, as it provides access to programs and funding that strengthen infrastructure, emergency services, workforce development, and community well-being.
At this year’s meeting, the MRGDC recognized two local organizations whose impact has been deeply felt across Eagle Pass and Maverick County. The Jorge MaldonadoFoundationwas honored for its community service, particularly in providing meals and assistance to families in need. The organization has worked tirelessly to combat food insecurity and has become a source of hope for vulnerable residents.
Also recognized was The Support Hub, which has played an important role in expanding access to mental health services in the region. By offering counseling, support groups, and wellness programs, The Support Hub addresses critical gaps in local healthcare resources, ensuring that individuals and families in Maverick County can access the help they need.
In addition to celebrating these organizations, the meeting marked a new chapter of leadership for Maverick County. Judge Ramsey English Cantu was formally elected Second Vice President of the MRGDC, a role that will allow him to advocate for Maverick County on issues ranging from regional transportation planning to public safety initiatives and social service programs.
“As County Judge, I want to personally thank and commend these organizations for the heart, passion, and dedication they pour into Maverick County,” voiced Judge Cantu, “Your work does not go unnoticed and continues to inspire us all.”
