The Maverick County Hospital District (MCHD) Board of Directors unanimously appointed Stephany Valdez to fill the vacant seat on its Board at a special meeting held on Friday, August 22, 2025, and was officially sworn-in as the newest Board of Director on Monday, August 25, 2025 at a regular meeting held at the District’s second floor conference room in Eagle Pass, Texas, announced Nestor Bonilla, Chief Executive Officer of the Maverick County Hospital District.
Valdez was selected by the MCHD Board of Directors among 14 applicants for the vacant Board seat and interviewing of four finalists earlier this month. The MCHD Board vacancy became open as a result of former Board Chairman Aaron Valdez’s election as Mayor of the City of Eagle Pass at a run-off City Council election held on June 7, 2025. Coincidentally, Valdez’s MCHD Board position was previously held by her husband, Aaron Valdez.
Valdez stated that she was deeply honored to have been appointed to fill the vacancy on the MCHD Board and ready to get to work in bringing new specialty physicians to the community as well as developing new healthcare facilities and expanding existing ones.
Valdez is a local business entrepreneur who owns a State Farm Insurance Agency in Eagle Pass and dedicates her time to serving on several community boards, including the Eagle Pass International Bridge System, Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce, the Eagle Pass Animal Grievance Committee, and the Eagle Pass Evening Lions Club.
At the August 25th MCHD Board meeting, the Board reviewed a presentation by Jay Hinkle of the Realty Trust Group on a survey and study performed on the feasibility of developing and constructing a new 25,000 square feet facility to expand office and clinic space to accommodate new specialty physicians being recruited to practice medicine in Maverick County. Hinkle advised the MCHD Board that his firm is finalizing the conceptual site plan, floor plan and elevation, and had requested qualifications from architectural firms, which five firms submitted a proposal for the new 25,000 square foot facility. The goal is to select and negotiate with a preferred architect firm by mid to late September 2025, and have the Board make a final decision on whether to proceed with the project by late October 2025.
MCHD CEO Nestor Bonilla informed the Board of several physicians whom the District is recruiting to practice various specialties in the community. Bonilla added that the District is working on finalizing the credentials of some physicians whom have expressed an interest in practicing medicine in Maverick County. Bonilla noted that the demand for speciality healthcare and physician services has increased significantly as Maverick County continues to grow and it is important to provide these services within the community instead of requiring patients to travel out of town. Bonilla concluded that the MCHD is working with all healthcare providers and stakeholders in the community.
Valdez was accompanied to her swearing-in ceremony by her husband, Eagle Pass Mayor Aaron Valdez, City Councilman Elias Diaz, City Councilwoman Jessica Rey Ramon, and Emergency Room Nurse Director Elishoel Reyes.
