The 2025 Texas high school football season starts on Friday, August 29, 2025 with a marquee matchup between the Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks and the Eagle Pass High School Eagles in the 19th Rivalry Meeting at 7 p.m. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Stadium in Eagle Pass, Texas.
The Winn Mavericks are under the helm of Head Football Coach Rene Ramirez and are the home team for this storied rivalry game on August 29th. The Mavericks are seeking their first victory in the heralded rivalry series between the two Eagle Pass high school football teams. The Mavericks have nine returning starters on offense from last year’s team and six returning starters on defense.
The Eagles are under the direction of Head Football Coach Roger Olivas and are seeking to continue their dominance over the smaller-size enrollment rival school of Winn. The Eagles have nine returning starters on offense from last year’s young team while five defensive starters return in 2025.
The home team Winn Mavericks offense will revolve around starting quarterback Juan Cruz, Jr. and an experienced offensive line led by Miguel Mancha, III, Aiden Martinez, and Jesus Navarrette and swift running backs such as Hazael Avila, Jayden Castillo, and Aaron Rodriguez, and wide receiver Jaime Riojas. On defense, the Mavericks stampeding defense will be anchored by last year’s District 14-5A, Division I middle linebacker Humberto Munoz, linebacker Alvin Chavez, defensive lineman Luis Negrete, and defensive back Bobby Cabrera.
The visiting Eagles self-proclaimed War Eagle offense will be guided by last year’s District 30-6A second team all-district quarterback Xavier Barrera, first team running back Luis Flores and first team all-district wide receiver Sebastian Velasquez, and bolstered by first team all-district lineman Eduardo Lopez and second team all-district lineman Jayden Garcia. On defense, the Eagles self-proclaimed Landsharks defense will be anchored by last year’s first-team defensive end Anthony Paniagua, first team all-district defensive back Rodrigo Garcia, linebackers Alex Ruiz and Manny Fernandez, and defensive backs Jorge Martinez and Ryan Rea.
The 19th Rivalry Meeting between the Mavericks and Eagles will definitely be a highly competitive and entertaining game as it has each previous meeting. Eagle Pass football aficionados are excited and enthusiastic every year for this rivalry game.
There’s nothing better in Texas than the start of a new high school football season, listening to the school fight songs blaring out loud, the marching bands music, cheer squads, dance teams, roaring crowds, the warm popcorn, pizza and nachos from the concession stand make the inaugural football season game a unique Texas experience. You don’t want to miss it. Make sure you purchase your Mavericks vs. Eagles game tickets online. A sold out and packed stadium is anticipated once again for this storied 19th Rivarly Meeting game.
Many local aficionados have referred to this annual football tradition in Eagle Pass by several names, including the Rivalry Meeting, the City Championship, the Menudo Bowl, and just another non-district game on both teams schedules. But one thing is certain—the game brings the community closer and bonds the students, athletes, coaches, parents, administration, teachers, staff, and guests with a sense of deep appreciation of how lucky we all are to call ourselves Eagle Passans.
The Eagle Pass Business Journal wishes both the Winn Mavericks and Eagles Pass Eagles a successful 2025 football season. Go Eagle Pass!
