Mavericks branded by Laredo Nixon Mustangs 38-18

The Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks were branded by the visiting Laredo Nixon High School Mustangs 38 to 18 in a non-district football game on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the EPISD Student Activity Center.
The Mavericks were driving against the Mustangs in the first quarter when the Mavericks fumbled the ball and the Mustangs recovered the fumble at their own 28 yard line. The Mustangs wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as Mustang quarterback Ralph Perez threw a 30 yard touchdown pass to Mustang running back Richie Rendon and the point after attempt was good to give the Mustangs a 7 to 0 lead with 10:03 remaining in the first period.
On the ensuing kickoff , the Mavericks kick off return man fumbled the football and the Mustangs pounced on the football at the Mavericks 37 yard line with 9:54 left in the first quarter. The Mustangs punched the ball In with an 18 yard gallop by running back Richie Rendon and the extra point attempt was good with 8:12 remaining in the first period, giving the Mustangs a 14 to 0 lead, a lead which they would never relinquish.
In the second quarter, the Mavericks finally got on the scoreboard on a sensational 73 yard touchdown run by Mavericks standout tailback Deion Alonso breaking several tackles against Mustang linebackers and defensive backs to race down the field for the score and the point after attempt was no good to narrow the score 14-6 with 10:35 left in the second period.
On the ensuing kick-off, the Mavericks recovered a fumble by the Mustangs kick-off returner at the Mustangs 33 yard line with 10:31 left in the second quarter. The Mavericks marched down the short field and on a fourth down and two yards at the two yard line Maverick running back Deion Alonso scampered into the end zone for the touchdown and the extra point failed narrowing the score 14 to 12 in favor of Nixon with 7:58 remaining in the second period, the closest the Mavericks would get to the Mustangs in the game.
The Mustangs responded to the
Mavericks second score with a 66 yard drive culminating with a 39 yard touchdown run by Mustang tailback Richie Rendon and the extra point attempt was good to give the Mustangs a 21-12 lead with 1:22 remaining before halftime. The Mustangs took the 21-12 lead into halftime.
The loyal Mavericks aficionados were entertained at halftime by the Mavericks Silver Line Dance team and the thundering Mavericks Band.
In the third quarter, the Mavericks orchestrated a 60 yard touchdown drive culminating with a 28 yard aerial strike from Mavericks quarterback Chris Cantu to wide receiver Carlos Cerezo on a fourth down and six yards to go at the Nixon 28 yard line and the two point attempt was no good, narrowing the score 21-18 in favor of the Mustangs with 2:52 left in the third quarter.
The Mustangs responded to the Mavericks third score with a 30 yard field goal by Mustang kicker Nicor Ramirez who was perfect for the night on all of his extra points and field goal attempts, increasing the Mustang lead 24 to 18 with 11:50 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Mavericks were shutout by the stingy Mustangs defense in the fourth quarter despite valiant efforts by the Mavericks offensive unit.
In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs added two touchdowns on a 14 yard pass and another on three yard run to put the game out of reach of the Mavericks by a final score of 38-18.
The Mavericks fall to 2-1 overall in the season and will play next week the perennially tough Hondo High School Owls on Friday, September 21, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.at Hondo, Texas.
