The Mayor’s Fitness Council Challenge between Eagle Pass High School and C.C. Winn High School as to which school would lose the most pounds during a certain period of time yielded over 500 pounds of weight loss among the two schools’ participants, announced Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu at the May 12, 2015 Eagle Pass Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting.
Mayor Cantu declared Eagle Pass High School as the winner of the first annual Mayor’s Fitness Council Weight Loss Challenge with a total weight loss of 291 pounds compared to C. C. Winn High School’s 239 pounds lost.
Mayor Cantu noted that the Eagle Pass High School team started the Weight Loss Challenge with a total weight of 6,984 pounds while the C. C. Winn High School team initial weight was 7,015 pounds. The most important thing is that both teams learned about the importance of nutrition, diet, and exercise while losing weight enroute to a healthier life.
Mayor Cantu presented the Eagle Pass High School team with a $500 grant sponsored by the Maverick County Hospital District.
The top three weight loss winners from Eagle Pass High School include Samuel Navejas with 28.6 pounds, Pablo Cantu with the greatest percentage weight loss from body mass, and Ramon Morin with 24.8 pounds lost.
The top three weight loss winners from C.C. Winn High School include Ricardo Hoffman with 32 pounds lost, Adriana Gonzales, and Jose Jimenez with a total weight loss of 28 pounds.
Ricardo Hoffman from C.C. Winn was declared the individual biggest loser of weight loss of 32 pounds. Hoffman was also awarded a $500 grant check for his greatest weight loss among all the participants.
Cantu thanked all the participants and encouraged everyone to continue losing weight and to persist with establishing a healthier lifestyle.
The Eagle Pass City Council established the Mayor’s Fitness Council on July 15, 2014 by approving a resolution appointing members to the Mayor’s Fitness Council. Mayor Ramsey English Cantu stated: “This is in conjoined efforts with The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) through their Border Regional efforts, ultimately trying to combat obesity issues with young children and how we can promote healthier lifestyles in our community. There is funding available for the city to run such programs.” The City of Eagle Pass was awarded a $6,000 grant by DSHS to operate an obesity prevention and wellness program within the community.
