Former Eagle Pass City Manager Hector Chavez, Sr. Scheduled to be Sentenced Monday, August 21st, in Federal Court

Former City of Eagle Pass, Texas City Manager Hector Chavez, Sr., who plead guilty to one count in a federal grand jury indictment of making a false statement to an FBI Agent, is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, August 21, 2017, at 10:40 A.M. by United States District Judge Alia Moses of the Western District of Texas, Del Rio Division, in Del Rio, Texas.
Chavez was indicted on April 15, 2016 on four counts by a federal grand jury, including paying a bribe of approximately $20,000 to a Maverick County Commissioner to allegedly intending to influence the County Commissioner to secure a contract of the Maverick County Landfill during May 2012 through June 2012; forging a personal services contract to conceal from federal authorities the alleged kick-back to the Maverick County Commissioner to secure the landfill contract; provided this falsified personal services contract to federal authorities in response to a federal grand jury subpoena; and making false statements concerning this alleged falsified personal services contract to an FBI agent regarding the legitimacy of said contract.
Chavez faces federal prison of up to five years, a fine up to $250,000, three years of community supervision, and a $100 special assessment.

Chavez’s case is part of an extensive FBI and Texas Rangers investigation of corruption, bribery, and “pay to play” bribery scheme involving Maverick County public construction contracts. Over 30 persons have been indicted and plead guilty with two defendants remaining fugitives. Among the 30 defendants who plead guilty and were sentenced to federal prison include four Maverick County Commissioners, a Maverick County Justice of the Peace, a Maverick County Assistant Auditor, a Maverick County Juvenile Probation Officer, several Maverick County employees, private contractors and individuals.
