The United States Senate failed to reach a Bi-Partisan Agreement on the extension of the federal debt before midnight on January 19, 2018, causing the federal government to enter into what Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) referred to as the “Trump Shutdown” on the first anniversary of President Donald J. Trump’s presidency.
President Trump summoned Senator Schumer to the White House on Friday, January 19th, to attempt to negotiate an agreement on the extension of the federal debt to avoid the federal government shutdown, but President Trump’s extreme conservative demands on over 800,000 DACA Dreamers, Immigration reform, CHIP insurance for children, U.S.-Mexico border security and Wall, and other federal spending caused the parties to reach a Bi-Partisan agreement.
Senator Schumer stated that there is “no one who deserves to take the blame for this” than President Trump for failing to accept a Bi-Partisan agreement and a “Yes” to two proposals, including one with the Trump Border Wall.
Federal employees and government entitlement beneficiaries may not be receiving payment of their checks and a reduced federal government will be experienced by Americans until an agreement is reached between the Senate and President Trump.
Senator Schumer stated that the Republicans have failed to provide leadership and governing of the United States despite having control of the Senate, House of Representatives, and the Presidency.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell offered an amendment to extend the federal debt until February 8th after failing to reach the necessary 60 votes to reach a Bi-Partisan agreement in order to allow additional time for negotiations on reaching a Bi-Partisan agreement.
Senator Schumer stated that it was as if President Trump wanted to have a federal government shutdown and now Trump has the federal shutdown on his shoulders.
