The City of Eagle Pass Water Works and Sewer System commenced two major construction projects at a grand opening ceremony held on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 that will expand the capacity of the municipal water treatment plant and replace 20 linear miles of old cast iron water lines in the downtown area with modern HDPE water lines to benefit the community, announced Jorge Barrera, General Manager.
Barrera noted that the first construction project is the expansion of the Roberto Gonzalez Regional Water Treatment Plant from its current 15 million gallons per day to 19 million gallons per day and the installation of a belt filter press and building at a cost of $12,086,000.
The expansion project will include the installation of additional water pumps, motors, strainers, skids (2), and belt filter press to the City of Eagle Pass Roberto Gonzalez Regional Water Treatment Plant. Barrera stated the expansion project is necessary to prepare the City of Eagle Pass for continued growth in the future as well as add new equipment that will allow the water plant to increase its gallons per day capacity. A new building will be constructed to house the new belt filter press system being installed. In addition, the project will replace existing UF membranes with new ones.
Barrera stated that the general contractor awarded the $12,086,000 expansion project is Associated Construction Partners, LTD.
The second project is the cast iron pipe replacement of approximately 20 linear miles of water pipelines in the downtown Eagle Pass area with newer HDPE pipe to modernize the quality of water and service delivered to customers while minimizing 90 percent of street damages due to pipe bursts at a cost of $17,435,000.
The general contractor of the cast iron pipe replacement project is Alvin E. Stock Contractor, LTD.
Barrera noted that both of these projects have taken six years to plan, design, and obtain the financing and are needed to modernize the local water system and expand its capacity for future growth of the community.
Local public dignitaries, business members, and citizens attended the grand opening ceremony held on July 30th to kickoff these two important community projects.
