The Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks kicked-off their 2019 Texas High School Football season with a crushing 30-0 shut out of the Crystal City High School Javelinas on Friday, August 30, 2019, at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Immediately prior to the game, the Mavericks celebrated Parents Night as each player, trainer, and manager walked down the football field with their respective parents or representatives as they were introduced to the loyal Maverick Nation aficionados in attendance at the season opening game.
Once the game’s opening kick-off got underway, the thundering Mavericks offensive machine under the helm of senior and three-year starter quarterback Ethan Johnston controlled the pace of the game while the Silver and Black defense led by linebacker Alex Garcia dominated the Javelinas offense to take a considerable 20-0 lead at halftime.
The Mavericks engineered a long touchdown drive of over 65 yards in the first quarter as senior defensive end Jose Hinojosa dove into the Javelinas end zone on a one yard plunge on a trick play and the point after attempt by place kicker Almikar Ramos was good to make it an early 7-0 lead.
While the hard hitting Mavericks defense kept the potent Javelinas offense off the score board, the Mavericks offense struck again with a long touchdown drive of over 50 yards as quarterback Ethan Johnston scampered into the promise land on a five yard run and the point after attempt was good to make it 14-0 in favor of the Mavericks early in the second quarter.
The Mavericks quickly scored again in the second quarter on a sensational 76 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ethan Johnston to standout wide receiver Ernesto Vasquez who raced past the Javelinas secondary into the end zone, but the extra point was unsuccessful as the Mavericks took a commanding 20-0 lead into half-time over the Javelinas.
In the second half, both teams made adjustments during halftime and implemented them in the remainder of the game.
The Mavericks scored in the third quarter on a 30 yard plus field goal by standout place kicker Almikar Ramos to take a 23-0 lead late in the third quarter.
The thundering Mavericks defense held the Javelinas offense scoreless in the second half to preserve the shut out of the Javelinas on outstanding play from linebackers Alex Garcia, Jared Roiz, and Michael Farris, defensive ends Jose Hinojosa and Axel Rodriguez, defensive tackle Isaias Flores, and defensive backs Eric Sanchez and Maximus Contreras.
The Mavericks added another touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a short drive resulting in a one yard touchdown run by running back Ethan Casares and the point after attempt was good to seal the 30-0 victory over the Javelinas.
With the hard fought win over the Javelinas, the Mavericks open the 2019 football season with a 1-0 record.
The Mavericks next play the Uvalde Coyotes in a non-district game on Friday, September 6, 2019, at 7:30 P.M. at the Honey Bowl in Uvalde, Texas. Both the Mavericks and the Coyotes won their season opening games and will seek to remain undefeated in the season. The Coyotes rallied from a 14 point halftime deficit to upset the Eagle Pass Eagles in overtime 28-27 last week.
All loyal Maverick Nation aficionados are encouraged to attend the Mavericks football game against the Uvalde Coyotes on Friday, September 6th, to support and cheer them on to victory.
