The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks trounced the Pearsall High School Mavericks 29-6 in a non-district football game on Friday, September 20, 2019 at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass, Texas, improving to 2-2 overall in the season.
The silver and black Mavericks defense stifled the potent Pearsall running game throughout the game to propel the Winn Mavericks to the hard fought victory, limiting Pearsall to only one touchdown late in the game via an aerial pass into the end zone.
After consecutive losses, Winn Head Coach Eric Villasenor made key adjustments to the Mavericks offensive personnel to take better advantage of the team’s strengths such as starting speedy Jose Padilla at quarterback and former quarterback Ethan Johnston at running back and other personnel moves. Coach Villasenor’s offensive personnel changes paid dividends for the Winn Mavericks, scoring 29 points compared to being shut out the past two games.
The visiting Pearsall Mavericks won the coin toss before the game and elected to kick the football to Winn to start the game.
Pearsall opened the game with an onside kick, surprising the Winn Mavericks kick-off return team as Pearsall recovered the football at Winn’s 49 yard line to open their first possession in the game.
Pearsall steadily drove the football with their patented ground-oriented offense to the Winn Mavericks eleven yard line and faced a fourth down and six yards, but the stellar thunder and lightning Mavericks defense held Pearsall on the fourth down at the Mavericks five yard line, forcing Pearsall to turn over the football to Winn after taking up most of the first quarter of play.
The Mavericks defense anchored by defensive linemen Jose Hinojosa, Jose Anzures, Isaias Flores, Alejandro Ontiveros, linebackers Alex Garcia, Jared Roiz, and Michael Farris, and defensive backs Argenis Gonzalez, Andrew Vasquez, Gilberto Vasquez, Maximus Contreras, and Eric Sanchez played exceptionally well throughout the game.
The Winn Mavericks first possession started at their own five yard line and marched down to their 25 yard line on consecutive rushes by running back Ethan Johnston, but Pearsall stripped the football on the ensuing play and recovered the pigskin at Winn’s 26 yard line to start their second possession in excellent field position.
Once again, the stampeding Winn Mavericks defense was called upon to shut down the threatening Pearsall Mavericks deep in their own territory and they did not disappoint the thousands of loyal Maverick Nation aficionados attending the game, forcing Pearsall to turn over the football on downs at Winn’s 19 yard line with a minute remaining in the first quarter.
Both teams exchanged possessions early in the second quarter.
The Winn Mavericks third possession in the game started at Pearsall’s 37 yard line after the Mavericks defense held them deep in Pearsall’s territory. Winn combined a series of runs by quarterback Jose Padilla, Ethan Johnston, and a pass to wide receiver Ernesto Vasquez to drive the football to the Pearsall four yard line. Quarterback Jose Padilla scored on a four yard keeper and the point after attempt by place kicker Almikar Ramos sailed through the uprights to give Winn an early 7-0 lead with 6:35 minutes remaining in the second quarter.
After the thundering Winn Mavericks defense held Pearsall to four and out, Winn’s fourth possession in the game started at their own 40 yard line. Winn only took two plays to score on a sensational 60 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jose Padilla to wide receiver Joe Garza and the two point conversion attempt was good to extend Winn’s lead 15-0 over Pearsall with 4:12 minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Winn attempted a 36 yard field goal immediately before halftime, but place kicker Almikar Ramos’ kick sailed wide left of the goal posts as time expired. The Winn Mavericks took a 15-0 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, Pearsall took the opening kickoff and took over six minutes off the clock through their ground game, but Winn Mavericks standout defensive end Jose Hinojosa recovered a fumble at Pearsall’s 45 yard line.
Winn opened their first possession in the second half at Pearsall’s 45 yard line and took only a few plays before running back Ethan Johnston galloped into the end zone on a 20 yard touchdown run and Almikar Ramos’ point after attempt was good to extend Winn’s lead 22-0 over Pearsall with 4:23 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Pearsall took the ensuing kick off and marched down to the Winn 16 yard line, but the stellar Winn Mavericks defense held on a fourth and goal as Pearsall’s pass attempt into the end zone went incomplete, turning the ball over on downs.
The Winn Mavericks engineered an 82 yard touchdown drive that included a fake punt for a first down to keep the drive alive and culminated on a two yard dive into the end zone by running back Ethan Johnston and Ramos’ point after attempt was good to extend Winn’s lead 29-0 over Pearsall with 7:25 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Pearsall took the ensuing kick off and orchestrated a touchdown drive late in the game, culminating in a 32 yard touchdown pass and the point after attempt failed, narrowing the score 29-6 with 4:35 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Winn Mavericks took the ensuing kick off and marched to the Pearsall six yard line as time expired, earning an impressive non-district victory 29-6 over Pearsall and improving their record to 2-2 in the season.
