As a result of Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu’s announcement of his candidacy for the Texas House of Representatives District 74 Democratic Party Nomination in the March 3, 2020 Primary Election, a flurry of candidates have surfaced for the upcoming Special City Officers Election of February 1, 2020.
The leading race in the Special City Officers Election on February 1st is the Mayor’s position between currently announced candidates City Councilman Rudy Villalpando and City Councilman Luis E. Sifuentes, which their announcements have caused them to have to resign as City Council members and opened their Places 2 and 4 for the special election. City Councilwoman Yolanda P. Ramon earlier expressed interest in also seeking the Mayor’s position, but has not yet registered as a candidate with City Secretary Imelda B. Rodriguez as press time on November 25th.
Should Councilwoman Ramon decide to register as a candidate for Mayor in the special election on February 1st, then her Place 3 City Council position would also open up for the special election.
Several candidates have already registered with City Secretary Imelda B. Rodriguez for City Council Places 2 and 4 or have announced their intent to seek these places.
For City Council Place 2 currently held by Rudy Villalpando, Maverick County Hospital District employee Elias Diaz announced his intent to seek this post and local businesswoman Elizabeth Chisum De La Garza has also announced her intent to seek this same position.
For City Council Place 4, local attorney Rolando Salinas announced his intent to seek this post currently held by Luis E. Sifuentes and local car salesman Mayito Obregon has also announced his intent to seek this position too.
Other local individuals have been mulling the idea of registering for either the Mayor’s race, the Place 2 race, and the Place 4 race. If Councilwoman Yolanda P. Ramon decides to run for Mayor, then her Place 3 City Council seat would also become available in the February 1st City Special Officers Election.
City Secretary Imelda B. Rodriguez reminds all interested individuals who would like to register as a candidate for any of the City Council posts up for special election that the deadline to register is December 2, 2019 at 5 P.M. at City Hall.
