City of Eagle Pass, Texas Mayor Ramsey English Cantu announced in his Facebook page that he is officially seeking the Texas House of Representatives District 74 Seat in the March 3, 2020 Primary under the Democratic Party after State Representative Alfonso “Poncho” Nevarez announced in the Texas Tribune that he will not be seeking re-election to a fifth term, forcing Cantu to have to resign as Mayor in order to run for another political position according to state law.
Nevarez announced on Friday, November 8, 2019 that he would not seek re-election. Nevarez stated that he wanted to spend more time with his family and take care of health issues. Nevarez has served in the Texas House since 2013.
Nevarez currently chairs the Texas House Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety and is Vice-Chair of the Select Committee on Mass Violence Prevention and Community Safety.
Mayor Cantu stated in his Facebook Page that “During my time as Mayor for the great City of Eagle Pass, I have put in the hard work. I built coalitions with county, state and federal officials to address both local and regional challenges. These experiences and relationships have prepared me to represent the 74th District in the Texas House, and I’m excited to announce my candidacy and officially kickoff m campaign. In the next up-coming days, we will roll out my accomplishments, my platform, and announce an impressive list of endorsements. I am humbled and grateful to have had so many people across the district encourage and support this decision.”
Cantu also stated that “Now that Austin has declared war on local control, it’s clear to me that our next State Representative is going to have to be someone who will fight for cities, counties, school districts and our way of life.”
The City of Eagle Pass City Council is currently composed of Mayor Cantu, Mayor Pro-Tem William “Billy” Davis, Yolanda P. Ramon, Rudy Villalpando, and Luis E. Sifuentes. Obviously, Cantu is resigning as Mayor and opening a vacancy in the Eagle Pass City Council.
