293rd Judicial District Attorney Roberto Serna barely edged political newcomer and challenger Alberto Rodriguez in the March 3, 2020 Texas Democratic Party Primary Election to earn re-election to another four year term since there are no Republican Party candidate in the November 3, 2020 Texas General Election.
Serna received a total of 7,493 votes combined from Maverick, Dimmit, and Zavala Counties compared to challenger Rodriguez’s 7,460 votes, only a margin of 33 votes to claim the political victory.
Rodriguez ran a highly competitive race throughout the three counties of Maverick, Dimmit and Zavala in his bid to upset his former boss and incumbent District Attorney Roberto Serna, falling shy by a slim 33 votes of scoring a major political upset.
Rodriguez received a significant amount of greater votes than Serna in Maverick County with 5,190 compared to Serna’s 4,021 votes. But Serna earned a major win in his home county of Zavala with 2,097 votes compared to Rodriguez’s 1,017 votes and narrowly defeated Rodriguez in Dimmit County to earn the hard fought political victory.
Serna stated that he “salutes” Rodriguez on a good hard fought campaign and is “truly humbled” that the citizens of Dimmit, Maverick, and Zavala counties have re-elected him to serve as their public servant.
It is unknown as of press time if Rodriguez will file an election recount or contest since the margin of victory was minimal by 33 votes.
