Maverick County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution declaring an Emergency Health Order for the County of Maverick, Texas due to the Coronavirus Pandemic affecting the community and United States at a special meeting held on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at Commissioners Courtroom in Eagle Pass, Texas.
County Judge David R. Saucedo read the resolution approved declaring an Emergency Health Order during the meeting, highlighting that the declaration prohibits the size of indoor and outdoor gatherings to not more than 10 people in Maverick County for a period of 30 days effective March 18, 2020 unless it is extended by Commissioners Court for a longer period.
Judge Saucedo noted that this declaration of Emergency Health Order in Maverick County will allow the County to document all its expenses incurred responding to the Coronavirus pandemic as this is a national emergency and may seek possible reimbursement from the federal government in the future.
Judge Saucedo stated that two local healthcare facilities have COVID-19 testing to individuals who meet the requirements to be tested for the Coronavirus, including United Medical Centers at El Indio Highway and Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center at Foster-Maldonado Boulevard in Eagle Pass, Texas.
County Commissioner Roberto Ruiz stated that he had visited his physician earlier before the meeting and that his physician had told him that the COVID-19 is a very serious virus illness that poses a serious threat to the health and safety of our community. Ruiz added that one of the persons tested locally is a 74 year old male individual who traveled to San Antonio, Texas and is awaiting his test results.
Judge Saucedo complimented all four local governmental entities for collaborating and working together in presenting a community-wide effort to combat and prevent the community spread of COVID-19 in Maverick County. Saucedo expressed his confidence that all four entities and their leaders will continue to work together concerning COVID-19 in our community.
Commissioner Ruiz noted that the United States and Canada had mutually agreed to close the northern border except for essential travel and trade between the two countries as a measure to control the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus in both countries. Ruiz raised the fact that Maverick County borders Mexico, but that presently there is no such agreement with respect to the southern border.
