Eagle Pass Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes announced that the City of Eagle Pass received notice from the Texas Department of State Health Services on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, that a fourth person had tested positive for COVID-19 in the community and encouraged residents to stay at home and practice social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the community.
Sifuentes stated that the first person in Eagle Pass to become infected with the COVID-19 virus was through community spread since the individual had not traveled outside the community, but that the second and fourth persons infected had reported traveling out of town or out of state while the third person is still being reviewed to determine if it was travel related or community spread.
Sifuentes noted that a total of 159 persons had been tested for COVID-19 in Maverick County and 79 had tested negative, four positive, and 76 are awaiting test results as of April 1, 2020. The City of Eagle Pass City Council and Maverick County Commissioners Court both approved a Stay at Home Emergency Order on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, requiring residents to shelter in place (home) for an indefinite period to prevent the community spread of COVID-19 within Maverick County. Persons in violation of the new Stay at Home Emergency Order may be arrested and charged with violating the Public Health Emergency Order and be fined up to $1,000 and/or jailed up to 180 days (six months).
The City of Eagle Pass has established a telephone number to its Emergency Operations Center (830) 421-5122 to answer any questions from any resident of Maverick County regarding COVID-19 and the new Stay at Home Emergency Order in effect in Eagle Pass and Maverick County.
