Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on Friday, April 17, 2020, at a press conference in Austin, Texas that public schools would remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eagle Pass Independent School District issued a press release after Governor Abbott’s announcement stating that “EPISD school campus buildings will physically remain closed. The district, however, will continue to provide instruction for our students via online and packet means for the remainder of this school year. Also, details on the 2020 Graduation Ceremonies will be provided within the coming days.”
The EPISD press release further states that “We ask for all students, staff, and parents to continue to work together as we move forward during this pressing time.”
While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone, the hardest hit group are the graduating seniors of Eagle Pass High School and C. C. Winn High School as the campuses were closed on March 23, 2020 after the Spring Break vacation and many of their senior traditions such as Prom, Talent Show, and others will not take place. Now, their high school graduation may be affected too due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Local senior high school students anxiously await to learn about their graduation as well as their future in light of the Coronavirus pandemic. Many local senior students are deciding what they are going to do after graduation such as whether to go to college, join the military, or try to find a job in the community. Some seniors are making the difficult decision as to which college to attend in the Fall Semester of 2020.
