A group of approximately 100 concerned Maverick County citizens held a protest on Sunday, May 31, 2020, at the Maverick County Lake Park in Eagle Pass, Texas, located at the United States-Mexico border, in support of the late George Floyd, who died on May 25th after being detained by four members of the Minneapolis, Minnesota Police Department and one police officer, Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee against his neck for about nine minutes that led to his death, against systemic racism and police brutality in the United States, and in support of Black Lives Matter.
The Maverick County group of protesters was composed of mostly young and courageous adults in the community who seek justice for all citizens, dignity and respect for all humans, an end of systemic racism and police brutality in the United States, and support for Black Lives Matter.
Maverick County is nestled on the banks of the Rio Grande River along the Unites States-Mexico border and has a population of 58, 500, which is 95% Hispanic.
The Maverick County protest raised salient issues facing the United States such as the horrific death of George Floyd, an African American man, at the hands of a white Minneapolis Police Officer, excessive police brutality nationally against African American and Hispanic men and women, systemic racism, and the need to respect every human equally and with dignity in society.
The small and conscientious Maverick County group of protesters joined in solidarity with the national non-profit group, Black Lives Matter, to bring social change, equality, and justice in the United States.
The Maverick County group’s protest lasted about three hours or so and was peaceful and non-violent. The group also encouraged all United States citizens to register to vote and exercise their right to vote at every local, state, and national election.
Both City of Eagle Pass Police Department and Maverick County Sheriff’s Department Officers were present to ensure that the protesters were not harassed as well as to maintain the peace of the community.
