Maverick County, Texas County Judge David R. Saucedo announced at a joint press conference between the City of Eagle Pass and Maverick County on Friday, May 15, 2020, that the U.S.-Mexico border county recorded the largest single day number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases with 17 new people testing positive for the lethal virus, raising the total number from yesterday’s 57 cases to today’s 74 cases.
County Judge Saucedo reported a total of 1,248 people have been tested in Maverick County with 752 negative results, 74 positive results, 423 waiting test results, 15 recovered people, and no fatalities as of May 15, 2020.
Judge Saucedo noted that a total of 44 positive COVID-19 cases are related or connected to one individual who was denied a COVID-19 test at the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center Emergency Room and that individual had to go to another test site and tested positive for the virus several days later, but in the meantime that individual had infected other people exponentially in the community.
Judge Saucedo stated that contact trace investigators of the joint Eagle Pass and Maverick County Emergency Operations Center had confirmed these 44 related or connected cases. Saucedo noted that 36 of these 44 positive cases had become infected by violating Declarations of Disaster and restrictions issued by Governor Greg Abbott, Maverick County, and the City of Eagle Pass. Saucedo added that another 8 people were acquaintances of these 36 people, totaling 44.
Judge Saucedo encouraged all residents of Maverick County to exercise social distancing, wear face masks in public, wash their hands regularly, use hand sanitizer, and limit travel to only essential matters to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus in the community.
