Eagle Pass Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes announced in his Facebook Page on Saturday, May 2, 2020, that two additional people had tested positive for COVID-19 in Maverick County to bring the total number of positive cases to 26.
The Texas Department of State Health Services is the state-agency responsible for overseeing the COVID-19 pandemic in the state and notifying local governmental entities on the total number of confirmed positive cases within their communities.
Mayor Sifuentes noted that as of Saturday, May 2, 2020, there was a total of 599 people tested for COVID-19 in Maverick County with 518 negative results, 26 positive cases, 55 people awaiting test results, and eight people had recovered.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered the state to reopen some of their businesses at a reduced capacity of 25 percent such as restaurants, retail stores, malls, and other businesses starting on Friday, May 1, 2020. But just as Texas was reopening, the state reported record level cases of positive COVID-19 cases and four consecutive days of over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases per day. Texas is not out of the woods yet from the COVID-19 pandemic. Texans are encouraged to stay at home and observe social distancing at all times and only go out for necessary essential travel.
As of Sunday, May 3, 2020, the State of Texas reported 390,560 people having done a COVID-19 test with 31,548 confirmed positive cases and 1,540 people hospitalized with COVID-19 and 867 fatalities statewide.
Mayor Sifuentes stated that “…these two [new cases] are related to a family who already had 4 positives. All 6 are attributed to community contact.”
