The novel coronavirus continues to spread within the community of Maverick County, Texas on the United States-Mexico border along the banks of the Rio Grande.
Eagle Pass and Maverick County Emergency Operations Center volunteer, Denise Nemeth, PA-C, announced that 15 new confirmed positive cases were reported in Maverick County by the Texas Department of State Health Services on Friday, June 26, 2020, raising the total number to 326 cases.
Nemeth stated a total of 5,573 people in Maverick County have had the COVID-19 test administered with 4,813 negative results, 236 positive results, 434 waiting for test results, 132 recovered, 192 active cases, 11 people are hospitalized, two fatalities, and the positivity rate is 5.8 as of June 26, 2020.
Nemeth noted that of the 11 people hospitalized in Maverick County, four of the patients are in the Intensive Care Unit and three of these are on ventilators in critical conditions. Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center has 10 Intensive Care Unit beds and up to 14-16 ventilators, according to Dr. Sergio Zamora.
Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center is the sole hospital available to the over 60,000 Maverick County residents. Due to the rapidly rising positive COVID-19 cases in Texas, San Antonio hospitals are currently not accepting patient transfers from surrounding communities such as Maverick County and South Texas, presenting a serious public health issue for Maverick County and all small and rural communities statewide.
The COVID-19 pandemic is dire and very serious in Maverick County as well as in Texas due to a surge of positive case since Memorial Day weekend in May of 2020.
Texas is on fire with positive COVID-19 cases as 5,747 people tested positive on Saturday, June 27, 2020, bringing the total number to 143,371 cases, 2,366 Texans have died due to COVID-19, 5,523 Texans are hospitalized with COVID-19, 78,248 people have recovered, and 1,722,826 have been administered a virus test while another 180,835 have had an antibody test done as of June 26, 2020.
Nationally, the United States is in the midst of a surge of positive COVID-19 cases with a record 44,782 new cases reported on Saturday, June 27, 2020 as Texas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Nevada hit new daily high records, forcing some states to pause the reopening of their businesses and economy.
The United States reports 2,525,700 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases and 125,500 people dying from coronavirus as of June 27, 2020.
As the United States was being devastated by the deadly virus on Saturday, June 27, the nation steered like a rudderless ship without a strategic national plan to stop or slow the COVID-19 pandemic while President Donald J. Trump golfed at one of his golf resorts in Virginia.
The message from the Trump White House is very clear that each state, county, and city must defend themselves against the lethal novel coronavirus as best as they can because there is not any national strategic plan nor is one expected to come anytime soon to stop or slow the community spread of the virus.
