Until a vaccine or cure is developed for the novel Coronavirus, the deadly virus continues to spread through communities across the world, including Maverick County, Texas.
Just one day after sustaining its second COVID-19 death in the community, Maverick County Emergency Operations Center Volunteer Denise Nemeth, PA-C, reported that nine new positive COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Maverick County by the Texas Department of State Health Services on Friday, June 5, 2020, bringing the total to 142 cases.
Nemeth noted the nine new positive COVID-19 cases are family-related, belonging to one family who became infected with the lethal virus. Nemeth, a Physician Assistant at the Maverick County Hospital District, recommended to all Maverick County residents to practice social distancing, wear face masks, wash one’s hands regularly, use hand sanitizer, and take the Coronavirus pandemic seriously.
Earlier in the week, Maverick County Judge David R. Saucedo announced that several individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 were not complying with the self-isolation or quarantine requirement issued by the Eagle Pass and Maverick County Local Health Authority. Judge Saucedo reported the Local Health Authority was charging two Maverick County residents for defying their quarantine under the Texas Health and Safety Code, a third-degree felony under Texas law, this week. Individuals who are infected with COVID-19 and do not comply with quarantine become carriers of the deadly virus, infecting many other people in the community.
Nemeth announced that as of June 5, 2020, a total of 2,964 people have been tested for COVID-19 in Maverick County with 2,198 negative results, 142 positive results, 624 people are waiting for their test results, 43 have recovered, and two people have died from the coronavirus. Nemeth added that there are 99 active COVID-19 people in Maverick County as of June 5, 2020 and one person is hospitalized.
