Maverick County and the State of Texas are experiencing a significant surge of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases since Mother’s Day on May 10, 2020 with numbers rapidly rising.
Maverick County District Clerk and Co-Director of the Maverick County Emergency Operations Center, Leopoldo “Polo” Vielma, announced at a joint City of Eagle Pass and Maverick County press conference held on Thursday, June 18, 2020, that eight new confirmed positive COVID-19 cases were reported in Maverick County by the Texas Department of State Health Services, raising the total number of cases to 214. The day before, June 17, Maverick County reported another six positive COVID-19 cases.
Vielma stated that 4,440 people in Maverick County have been administered a coronavirus test with 3,759 negative results, 214 positive results, 467 are waiting test results, 59 have recovered, two fatalities, one hospitalized, and 153 remain active. Vielma noted the positivity rate for COVID-19 in Maverick County is 4.8 percent.
The rising positive COVID-19 numbers in Maverick County clearly represents that the deadly virus is widely spread within the community and that local residents need to continue practicing social distancing and follow the U.S. Centers for Disease and Infectious Control (CDC) recommendations to wear a face mask in public, wash hands frequently, use hand sanitizer, maintain six feet distance with other individuals, avoid gatherings of 10 or more people, and limit travel to essential matters.
World-renowned epidemiologist Dr. Anthony Fauci of the United States stated that America is still in the first-stage of the Coronavirus Pandemic and people need to wear face masks in public and follow social distancing guidelines established by the CDC to limit the community spread of the lethal COVID-19 virus.
Texas reported another record daily high of positive COVID-19 cases on Thursday, June 18, 2020, with a total of 3,516 new cases, raising the statewide total to 99,851 cases. A total of 2,105 Texans have died from COVID-19 as of June 18. The total number of hospitalized Texans due to COVID-19 rose to 2,947 on June 18. A total of 1,407,741 Texans have been administered a COVID-19 virus test while another 152,796 people have had an antibody test.
Texas is not alone with the rapid rise of positive COVID-19 cases as 21 American states are experiencing a surge of cases, mostly in the south and southwest United States. Surging states include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, California, Oregon, New Mexico, Texas and others. Many of these surging states re-opened their economies and businesses early in late-April or May 2020 and are now paying the price for parroting the Trump White House policy to reopen at all costs to bolster President Trump’s re-election campaign, including Texas.
Nationally, as of June 18, 2020, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases is rapidly rising with a total of 2,201,300 people in the United States have been infected with the coronavirus and at least 118,400 people have died, according to the New York Times.
Until a vaccine is developed and manufactured for the deadly coronavirus, the best method of prevention currently is to wear a face mask in public to avoid community spread of the virus.
