16 Dimmit County Jail Inmates Test Positive for COVID-19

Dimmit County has reported a total of 16 Dimmit County Jail inmates testing positive for COVID-19 at the facility located in Carrizo Springs, Texas, according to the Dimmit County COVID-19 Situation Report issued on Friday, August 7, 2020.
According to the August 7 Dimmit County COVID-19 Situation Report, there are a total of 30 active COVID-19 virus cases in Dimmit County, including 14 within the community and 16 Dimmit County Jail cases.
The cumulative total of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in Dimmit County are 150 cases with three deaths, 46 people waiting for test results, and 117 recovered cases, according to the August 7 report.
Dimmit County Jail is operated by the Dimmit County Sheriff’s Department under the leadership of Sheriff Marion Boyd and is a medium-security detention center for local, state, and federal inmates.
Many of the inmates at the Dimmit County Jail are pre-trial federal court inmates waiting for trial and final disposition in criminal cases arising from the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, Del Rio Division, in Del Rio, Texas under the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service. Other inmates include people detained by the Carrizo Springs Police Department, Dimmit County Sheriff’s Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
It is unknown if any of the three reported fatalities due to COVID-19 in Dimmit County are any inmates at the county jail. The Dimmit County COVID-19 Situation Report does not state who the three deceased persons are or whether they were local citizens or inmates at the county jail.
At least one or more Dimmit County Jail inmates have had to be hospitalized at the Dimmit County Memorial Hospital in Carrizo Springs, Texas as a result of COVID-19. The exact number was unavailable as of press time.
