With 26 days remaining before the public schools of the Eagle Pass Independent School District reopen on August 31, 2020 for the 2020-2021 school year in Eagle Pass, Texas, COVID-19 infections are uncontrollable in Maverick County as 111 new confirmed positive cases were reported by the Texas Department of State Health Services on Wednesday, August 5, 2020.
Maverick County and its health care providers, public health experts, public officials, and citizens have not been able to slow or stop the community spread of COVID-19 within the county since the Memorial Day Holiday weekend in late-May 2020, particularly since the month of July which saw an exponential growth of infections until now.
For instance, on August 5, 2020 a total of 111 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Maverick County; another 122 cases and two deaths were reported on August 4; another 99 cases and five deaths were reported on August 3; another 137 cases and three deaths were reported on July 31; another 50 cases were reported on July 30; another 72 cases and two deaths were reported on July 29; another 108 cases and three deaths were reported on July 28; and another 68 cases and five deaths were reported on July 27. The month of July 2020 just keeps on going with more COVID-19 infections on a daily basis.
As a matter of fact, the month of July 2020 was the deadliest with 36 deaths from COVID-19 and the highest with the most infections with 1,549 positive COVID-19 cases to date, averaging 1.16 deaths per day and 49.96 positive cases per day for the month.
So on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, it was no surprise when Eagle Pass Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes reported 111 new confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in Maverick County, although a bit of good news was that there were no reported deaths.
Sifuentes stated a total of 11,860 people in Maverick County have been administered a COVID-19 test with 2,321 positive results, 8840 negative results, 699 pending results, 999 active cases, 1,276 recovered people, 46 deaths, 52 hospitalized patients, and the positivity rate increased to 21.0, the highest rate to date.
Obviously, these statistics clearly show that Maverick County continues to be in the midst of an uncontrollable COVID-19 transmission crisis within the county affecting citizens of all ages, sex, race, nationality, and economic standing. COVID-19 is infecting people in Maverick County as well as killing our people. This is reality, not a hoax.
Sifuentes pleaded with all Maverick County citizens to follow the CDC Guidelines of wearing a face mask in public, wash hands with soap regularly, use hand sanitizer, practice social and physical distancing of six feet, avoid gatherings, limit travel for essential matters, and stay home in order to slow or stop the community spread of the COVID-19 virus in Maverick County.
