Eagle Pass Independent School District Police Department Officer Santos Hernandez Succumbs to COVID-19, Joining Father and Mother Who Earlier This Month Passed Away from COVID-19

Maverick Countians mourn the loss of Eagle Pass Independent School District Police Department Officer Santos Hernandez on Sunday, August 16, 2020 at a San Antonio, Texas medical center after succumbing to the invisible and silent novel coronavirus after a courageous battle, tragically joining his father, Santos Hernandez, and mother, Irene Hernandez, who passed away on August 4 and August 12, respectively, from COVID-19 too.
EPISD Police Officer Santos Hernandez joined the local school district police department in October 2018 after a successful and distinguished career with the City of Eagle Pass Police Department for many years. Prior to joining the Eagle Pass Police Department, Officer Santos Hernandez also served with the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department.
In a Facebook posting of Eagle Pass Junior High on Sunday, August 16, 2020, where Officer Hernandez was assigned to, states that “it is with great sadness that we inform you that our friend and colleague, Officer Santos Hernandez, passed away today. Our EPJH community and family are saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Hernandez. He was an outstanding officer who cared for the well being of each and every one of our students and staff members. We will miss him very much. Please keep Mrs. Hernandez and her family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Eagle Pass Junior High Staff members remembered Officer Santos Hernandez as a genuine public servant always positive and helpful. Patricia Pete Rodrigues wrote “He always had a smile on his face and ready to lend a hand.” Lulu Leija stated “He always greeted with a smile.” Maribel Kypuros Ramirez added “Our condolences to the Hernandez Family who has loss (sic) so much to this virus. [He was] always smiling and offering a helping hand….”
EPISD Officer Santos Hernandez’s funeral arrangements are under the direction of Yeager-Barrera Mortuary, 1613 Del Rio Blvd., Eagle Pass, Texas 78852, Telephone No. (830) 773-3211.
Officer Hernandez’s body will arrive on Monday, August 17, from San Antonio, Texas in the early evening, approximately at 8 P.M., under an EPISD Police Department Escort. Two EPISD Police Department vehicles will accompany and escort Officer Hernandez’s remains from San Antonio to Eagle Pass, where possibly other law enforcement agencies may join the escort to the funeral home.
His dearly beloved parents, Santos Hernandez and Irene Hernandez, will be honored and celebrated at a private memorial ceremony limited only to family members on Wednesday, August 19, 2020.
EPISD Officer Santos Hernandez is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Hernandez, and one daughter, family, colleagues, and friends.
Funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as they are scheduled by the Hernandez family.
