One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Yes, eight dearly beloved Maverick County citizens died from COVID-19 during the weekend of August 21-24, 2020 and 60 new confirmed positive COVID-19 cases were reported on Monday, August 24, 2020 by Eagle Pass Assistant Fire Chief and Co-Director of the Eagle Pass and Maverick County Emergency Operations Center Rodolfo “Woody” Cardona.
The silent and invisible novel coronavirus transmission in Maverick County continues unabated and widespread despite the reduced number of tests reported during the month of August. COVID-19 is alive and well within the community and seeking new people to infect. It is highly infectious, contagious, and deadly. Protect yourself and your family.
All of the eight citizens reported dying from COVID-19 on August 24 were male individuals varying in ages from 46 years old, 47 years old, 62 years old, 76 years old, 80 years old, 86 years old, 90 years old, and 100 years old. These eight fatalities reported on August 24 set a new single day high record for fatalities due to COVID-19 in Maverick County.
Cardona stated that as of August 24, 2020, a total of 14,785 people in Maverick County have had a COVID-19 test administered with 3,228 positive results, 11,295 negative results, 262 pending results, 693 active cases, 2,453 recovered people, 82 fatalities, 42 people hospitalized at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center, and the positivity rate remains high at 22.2%.
Maverick County citizens are highly encouraged to stay home and follow the CDC Guidelines to slow or stop the community spread of COVID-19 in the county, including wearing a face mask in public, wash hands with soap regularly, use hand sanitizer, practice social and physical distancing of six feet, and limit travel to essential matters only.
Pending to be tested for COVID-19 in Maverick County are approximately 2,000 health care providers, 175 jail inmates at the Maverick County Tom Bowles Detention Center, clients and staff of adult day care centers, clients and staff of nutrition centers, residents and staff of nursing home and rehabilitation centers, students and staff of child care centers, and students, teachers, and staff of the Eagle Pass Independent School District.
Maverick County public officials should continue implementing a strong testing program within the community and not be swayed by politicians in Austin, Texas and Washington, D.C. to slow down testing protocols for the upcoming political season.
Texas reported 2,754 new confirmed positive cases, 25 deaths, 5,019 hospitalized patients, and a positivity rate of 16.2% on August 24, 2020, bringing the cumulative totals to 580,384 positive cases and 11,395 deaths.
Nationally, the United States reported 40,351 new confirmed positive COVID-19 cases and 504 deaths on August 24, 2020, bringing the cumulative total to 5,754,000 (Million) cases and 177,100 deaths.
The United States has the highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the world due to a lack of a national plan from President Donald J. Trump and his administration, who chose to leave it up to each state, county, and city to decide how to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. The time of reckoning is coming on November 3, 2020.
National public health experts have noted that the true count of Americans infected with COVID-19 and fatalities due to COVID-19 are significantly higher than reported by governmental or public health agencies.
