Eagle Pass Independent School District Superintendent Samuel Mijares announced on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 in an exclusive interview with the Eagle Pass Business Journal that another student at Liberty Elementary School tested positive for COVID-19 and is now in isolation pursuant to CDC and local school district COVID-19 protocols.
Mijares stated that the new confirmed positive COVID-19 student is from the same classroom that reported two students and the teacher being positive last week, bringing the total to three students and one teacher from the same classroom. All three students and the teacher are in quarantine pursuant to COVID-19 protocols.
Mijares noted that it is unknown whether the new student was infected at the school or at home or elsewhere. Mijares urged all parents, students, teachers, and staff to strictly follow the CDC Guidelines of wearing a face mask in public, wash hands with soap regularly, use hand sanitizer regularly, and practice social and physical distancing of at least six feet apart.
Mijares added that he and the school district Board of Trustees recommend parents to select having their children enrolled in remote instruction to avoid any potential infections of COVID-19. He recognized that some parents can not have their children at home during the day because they work and do not have other adults to supervise the children. These parents have no choice but to send their children to in-person instruction at one of the 24 campuses within the local school district, noted Mijares.
Mijares highlighted that the EPISD had just received an additional 1,000 internet hotspots for distribution to students who do not have internet access at home to do their remote instruction. Earlier, the EPISD had distributed 2,000 internet hotspots to students purchased with financial contributions from the City of Eagle Pass and Maverick County. In total, the EPISD will distribute 3,000 internet hotspots to its students. The hotspots are being distributed free of charge at the respective campuses on a first come, first served basis for eligible students. He recommended parents to obtain an internet hotspot for their children’s remote instruction.
