Eagle Pass Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes Seeks Re-Election to a Full Four Year Term

Eagle Pass Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes registered as a candidate for re-election on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, before City Secretary Imelda B. Rodriguez at City Council Chambers accompanied by his wife, Cynthia, and four children.
Mayor Sifuentes was elected in a Special City Officers Election on February 1, 2020 for the unexpired term of former Mayor Ramsey English Cantu who stepped down to run for State Representative, District 74 in the March 1, 2020 Democratic Party Primary Election. Sifuentes defeated former City Councilman Rudy Villalpando for the unexpired term of Mayor.
Mayor Sifuentes is now asking the citizens of Eagle Pass to elect him for a full four year term in the City Officers Election to be held on Saturday, May 1, 2021 in order to continue with the key projects initiated and managed during his brief tenure as Mayor as well as develop new policies and programs to improve the quality of life, infrastructure, and economy of the community.
Mayor Sifuentes stated that during his brief unexpired term the City of Eagle Pass completed important public projects such as the Public Safety Headquarters on South Monroe Street that houses the Eagle Pass Police Department and Eagle Pass Fire Department new offices and was besieged by the global COVID-19 pandemic, requiring the City of Eagle Pass develop and enter united collaborative relationships with all local public governmental entities such as the County of Maverick, Eagle Pass Independent School District, Maverick County Hospital District, State of Texas, and local healthcare providers to develop and implement a community contingency plan against the COVID-19 virus.
Mayor Sifuentes touted the development and opening of the joint City of Eagle Pass and Maverick County Emergency Operation Center (EOC) to address the COVID-19 pandemic and the start of vaccination of local citizens with over 1,200 Moderna COVID-19 vaccines during January 13-14, 2021 at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center and City of Eagle Pass International Center for Trade.
Sifuentes noted the Emergency Operation Center will receive 1,200 COVID-19 vaccines for six weeks, totaling 7,200 vaccines for the citizens of Eagle Pass and Maverick County.
Sifuentes added that the City of Eagle Pass and all local public governmental entities have developed a unified legislative agenda that has been forwarded to state and federal officials. Sifuentes stated that “Unity is power.” He added the City of Eagle Pass is diligently working with state and federal governments to procure the necessary funding to develop and complete necessary infrastructure projects in the community.
Mayor Sifuentes discussed the strong interest among private investors in investing and opening new businesses in Eagle Pass, including one business that has announced the opening of a new franchise along Bibb Avenue. Sifuentes added that the City plans to open a Business Incubator at the old Riskind’s Building in downtown Eagle Pass to assist and develop new entrepreneurs in the community that will generate new jobs and revenues. He also noted the City’s Economic Development Department’s garnering new business grants for local entrepreneurs.
Sifuentes also discussed the founding of the Eagle Pass and Maverick County Economic Development Alliance during his tenure to attract and recruit new economic development to the community, creating new jobs and growth in the City of Eagle Pass.
Mayor Sifuentes noted the appointment of Dr. Victoriano Valdez as the Local Health Authority to guide and develop a public health plan for the COVID-19 pandemic and all public health matters. Sifuentes added the City of Eagle Pass enjoys a strong relationship with all local healthcare providers, including Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center, Maverick County Hospital District, United Medical Centers, Eagle Pass Independent School District, and all private healthcare providers.
Mayor Sifuentes concluded that he respectfully requests the support and vote of all Eagle Pass residents in the upcoming May 1st City Officers Election for a full four year term to continue providing leadership in all public issues facing the community as well as improve the quality of life.
