The Maverick County Emergency Operation Center (EOC) in partnership with Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center administered a total of 1,200 Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to healthcare providers and residents of Maverick County 65 and older during January 13-14, 2021 as part of the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) COVID-19 Vaccine Large Vaccination Hub Program.
Maverick County EOC was selected by DSHS to be one of 31 statewide COVID-19 Vaccine Large Vaccination Hub centers on January 8, 2021, entitling Maverick County to receive 1,200 vaccines for a period of six weeks totaling 7,200 vaccines commencing on January 11.
Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center hosted the first large scale vaccination on Wednesday, January 13, administering between 350 to 400 Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to Maverick County residents within Phase 1-A and 1-B of DSHS vaccine eligibility regulations.
Maverick County EOC hosted the second large scale vaccination on Thursday, January 14, administering between 850 to 900 vaccines at the City of Eagle Pass International Center for Trade.
The two day vaccination program was a great success despite some initial delays in organizing it and implementing the vaccination program. Maverick County residents were patient and grateful to be receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, stating the wait was worth getting the vaccine.
Eagle Pass Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes stated the experience gained by the Maverick County EOC and Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center in implementing the first large scale COVID-19 vaccination program will be used in next week’s program of an additional 1,200 vaccines to be administered.
Maverick County Judge David R. Saucedo stated that EOC will administer next week’s COVID-19 vaccination program and will notify local residents of their date and time to be vaccinated.
County Judge Saucedo reminded all residents of Maverick County to please register for the COVID-19 vaccine through the website of Maverick County or the City of Eagle Pass.
The large scale COVID-19 vaccination program comes at a very opportune time as Maverick County is in the midst of a public health crisis with surging COVID-19 infections in the community.
On Thursday, January 14, 2021, EOC reported six new fatalities among Maverick County citizens from COVID-19 and 133 new confirmed positive COVID-19 cases, bringing the cumulative total to 172 fatalities and 7,996 positive cases in Maverick County. However, DSHS reports a total of 216 fatalities in Maverick County since the COVID-19 pandemic commenced in March 2020, a difference of 44 fatalities than locally reported.
