United States President Donald J. Trump lost his bid for re-election in the November 3, 2020 general election to Democrat Joe Biden and never accepted defeat, stoking unfounded and false claims regarding voting fraud claims that incited his loyal base followers to assault the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 during a joint session of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate while certifying the Electoral College victory of Joe Biden as President and Kamala Harris as Vice-President.
Thousands of loyal Trump followers attended a Trump rally outside the White House where Trump spoke to his followers and told them to march down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. to the U.S. Capitol and tell their Congressmen/women to not certify the Electoral College victory of Biden and Harris.
Immediately after Trump told his supporters to march down Pennsylvania Avenue to the U.S. Capitol, thousands of Trump supporters followed his orders and proceeded to march to the Capitol several blocks away.
Upon arriving at the U.S. Capitol, Trump supporters formed a mob and raged with anger broke through U.S. Capitol Police barricades and climbed over the Capitol wall and proceeded to smash windows, doors, and overpower U.S. Police Capitol Officers to gain entry into the hallow halls of democracy in the world, the U.S. Capitol.
Once inside the Capitol, the Trump mob broke windows, furniture, entered the offices of U.S. Congressmen/women, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s office, took national security documents, wrote threatening messages, and gained entry into the U.S. Senate Chambers while failing to enter the U.S. House of Representative Chambers.
The Trump mob engaged in a melee with members of the U.S. Capitol Police and other federal law enforcement officers during the assault of the Capitol, culminating in the tragic death of four people and one U.S. Capitol Police Officer-totaling five overall killed.
The Trump mob assault on democracy at the U.S. Capitol has left an indelible historical mark on the history of the United States with an attempted coup d’ etat incited by the words of a U.S. President and a battered reputation among global nations.
“This is an attempted coup d’ etat incited by the President of the United States,” said presidential historian Michael Beschloss. “We are in an unprecedented moment when a president who is willing to conspire with mobs to bring down his own government. This is totally against the idea of democracy for which the nation has stood for over two centuries,” added Beschloss.
Subsequently, both Democratic and Republican Congressional leaders are now asking that Vice-President Mike Pence invoke the 25th Amendment in the U.S. Constitution to remove President Trump from office or to have the U.S. House of Representatives approve Articles of Impeachment and forward them to the U.S. Senate for their consideration and approval.
The final 13 days of President Trump’s tenure are filled with deep concerns and trepidation for the national security and safety of the United States and its 330 million citizens.
