Currently, there is one candidate registered for the position of Mayor while another candidate was disqualified due to term limits. Incumbent Mayor Luis E. Rodriguez due to a City Ordinance that limits City Council members to two consecutive four year terms. City Councilman Rolando Salinas is the only registered candidate for Mayor at the moment. Mayor Sifuentes has mentioned that he might be filing a lawsuit against City Secretary Imelda B. Rodriguez and the City of Eagle Pass to challenge the interpretation of the City Ordinance limiting two consecutive four year terms, but as of press time Sifuentes has not done so.
For City Council Place 2, there is only one candidate registered as of press time, incumbent City Councilman Elias Diaz.
For City Council Place 4, there are three candidates registered as of press time, including Maricarmen Perales Rangel, Leeroy Euresti, and Monica J. Cruz.
The strength of a community is its political leadership, particularly during the difficult moments being lived as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Extraordinary times requires extraordinary leadership.
Any person interested in registering as a candidate for either Mayor and City Council Places 2 and 4 may do so with City Secretary Imelda B. Rodriguez by the deadline of 5 p.m. on Friday, February 12, 2021.
