The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), official COVID-19 tracker, reported a total of 296 fatalities from COVID-19 in Maverick County as of February 25, 2021, at 3 p.m., a significant difference of 75 additional fatalities than reported locally by the Maverick County Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
According to the Maverick County EOC, a total of 50,485 people in Maverick County have been tested for COVID-19 with 10,174 positive results, 40,099 negative results, 212 pending test results, 221 fatalities, 8,917 people recovered, 1,036 active cases, 11 people currently hospitalized at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center, and a positivity rate very high at 20.2% as of Thursday, February 25, 2021.
Maverick County EOC officials state that the number of fatalities reported by the local COVID-19 agency are based on documentation such as death certificates or other medical records actually received by them as of the date of each report. Local EOC officials claim that they do not know how it is that DSHS is reporting a higher total of fatalities than them, but that they will report the fatalities upon receiving documentation and confirmation at the local EOC.
Since DSHS is the official state of Texas agency responsible for tracking and handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, their total figure of 296 fatalities from COVID-19 in Maverick County as of February 25, 2021 is deemed to be the official fatalities count for the county.
Maverick County is rapidly approaching the total of 300 fatalities from COVID-19 as there are only a few days left in the month of February 2021.
