While the Artic winter storm that struck Texas during February 14-20, 2021 may have lowered the number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases that week, it did not stop the total number of fatalities related to COVID-19 from increasing in Maverick County as the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) reported 307 COVID-19 related fatalities in Maverick County on Saturday, February 27, 2021.
Maverick County has now topped over 300 COVID-19 related fatalities with the new total of 307 fatalities reported by DSHD on February 27, 2021.
The joint City of Eagle Pass and Maverick County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) last reported a total of 231 COVID-19 related fatalities in Maverick County on Friday, February 26, 2021, a difference of 71 less fatalities than reported by the official COVID-19 state tracker (DSHS).
According to the Maverick County EOC, there were a total of 50,588 people tested for COVID-19 with a total of 10,177 confirmed positive test results, 40,316 negative test results, 1,001 active cases, 8,945 recovered people, 95 pending test results, 14 people hospitalized locally at the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center, and a high positivity rate of 20.1% as of Friday, February 26, 2021.
In one year since the COVID-19 pandemic started in the United States, no one believed that over 300 people would have died from COVID-19 in Maverick County, much less over 510,000 people in the nation. The COVID-19 virus remains alive and mutating into new forms of variants in both Maverick County and the United States.
All residents of the United States must continue to remain vigilant and observe the CDC Guidelines to wear a face mask, wash hands regularly with soap, use hand sanitizer regularly, practice social distancing of six feet or greater, avoid gatherings, limit travel to essential matters, and stay home in order to avoid the deadly COVID-19 virus from transmitting further within the country.
